KuCoin is a world-renowned cryptocurrency exchange serving more than 40 million users globally. It's known for advanced features and a wide range of assets. However, KuCoin has faced several controversies, primarily related to regulatory issues and hacks, which we'll explore in detail.

Throughout this KuCoin exchange review, we'll take an in-depth look at the platform, including its trading capabilities, market access, supported assets, staking system, security measures, and other advanced features, to help our readers assess whether KuCoin is right for them.

    Kucoin Exchange Pros and Cons

    Pros

    • Supports a large range of assets
    • Provides native Web3 access
    • Available on mobile and desktop devices
    • Multiple staking/earn tools
    • High leverage limits
    • Caters to beginners and experienced traders

    Cons

    • Confusing fee structure
    • Unavailable or limited in certain countries

    Background and Reputation

Trust is essential when it comes to investing. Crypto trading platforms hold your money and require you to provide sensitive information, such as your ID documents, bank information, and address. Therefore, it's advisable to use a secure crypto exchange that employs sufficient protective measures and is trusted by the community.

    Company Overview

Founded in 2017, KuCoin was originally based in China before moving to Singapore, and eventually to the Seychelles due to more lenient regulatory requirements. KuCoin has been a significant name in the crypto exchange space for over 5 years, frequently mentioned alongside Binance and Bybit.

KuCoin is an all-in-one crypto exchange platform. It covers every common activity, including trading, automation, and staking. As such, it's suitable for a broad range of users, including day traders, long-term investors, and Decentralized Finance (DeFi) enthusiasts.

    Regulation & Licensing

Regulation has historically been a weak area for KuCoin. Despite operating worldwide, several prominent jurisdictions prohibit the exchange, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Singapore.

Despite strict regulatory requirements, KuCoin has operated without approval. In January 2025, the exchange's operator, Peken Global Limited, was forced to exit the US market and pay $297 million for operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. The exchange also appears on the UK Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) official warning list.

Although KuCoin has found itself in rough waters regarding regulatory requirements, the exchange is committed to evolving with the times and pursuing approval. In November 2025, KuCoin obtained a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCAR) license, which requires ongoing proof-of-reserves audits and enables it to operate legally in the European Economic Area (EEA).

    Trust & History

Looking at an exchange's history can reveal a lot about how it treats customers and handles controversies. Exchanges that prioritize delivering a trustworthy, high-quality user experience are generally superior to those that focus on profit above all else.

KuCoin has faced one significant security breach. In 2020, hackers (identified as North Korea's Lazarus Group) breached KuCoin's hot wallets, stealing approximately $275 million in crypto. KuCoin temporarily suspended deposits/withdrawals and fully compensated users. The exchange successfully recovered roughly 84% of the stolen funds.

The only other notable KuCoin exchange security incident was a 45-minute hacking of its X account in April 2023. The incident saw bad actors post a fake giveaway on KuCoin's official X account. Thankfully, it was relatively minor, with around $22,600 stolen.

While the 2020 hack was significant, KuCoin's platform has improved its security controls and hasn't been the victim of any other breaches. Moreover, the exchange has been highly transparent about the hack and its subsequent recovery efforts; its handling of the situation goes a long way toward earning back community trust.

    User Reviews

    Kucoin Trustpilot
    Kucoin Trustpilot Review

Reading crypto exchange reviews written by other users can be a good way of determining whether a platform is safe, user-friendly, and capable. While exchanges typically receive low ratings, you should approach platforms with overwhelmingly negative reviews with caution. Similarly, platforms that do not reply to user reviews are less trustworthy.

Is KuCoin legit? The exchange held a 1.9/5 rating on Trustpilot and replies to just 31% of negative reviews. Moreover, responses typically take over a month, indicating a lack of communication between the exchange and users.

However, mid-way through writing this KuCoin exchange review, Trustpilot removed a number of fake KuCoin reviews, issued a warning, and removed the exchange’s rating for breaching its guidelines, indicating that KuCoin attempted to manipulate reviews.

Recent Trustpilot reviews are mixed. Some users praise KuCoin's features, access to early-stage tokens, and promotions. Others highlight issues with recovering lost assets and KuCoin's monthly fee for inactive accounts. On forums like Reddit, people say KuCoin is suitable for active users, but support is lackluster, and withdrawals can be challenging in restricted countries.

How to Sign Up for Kucoin Exchange

Working out how to use the KuCoin exchange can be challenging. It has unique tools/features, some of which KuCoin has designed for advanced users and could overwhelm novices. Most features have their own explanations, so we'll focus on the essentials of the KuCoin exchange sign-up process to keep things simple.

    Step 1: Create an Account

    Kucoin Registration Homepage
    Kucoin Registration

First, navigate to the KuCoin homepage. Then, click the white 'Sign-Up' button in the top right corner. You can sign up using a Telegram, Google, or Apple account. Alternatively, you'll need to provide an email address or phone number, enter a verification code, and choose a password.

    Step 2: Complete KYC Verification

    Kucoin ID verification
    Kucoin ID verification

After creating your account, KuCoin will prompt you to complete Know-Your-Customer (KYC) verification, which is mandatory to deposit or trade. You must provide some personal information (name, address, etc) and a photo ID (passport, driving license, ID card).

It takes a few minutes to provide the required verification information. While KuCoin often processes it near-instantly, it can take up to 24 hours, and KuCoin may request additional information if needed.

    Set 3: Secure Account

    Kucoin Security Options

Once you've completed Know-Your-Customer verification, there are a few extra steps you should take to improve your account's security before depositing. We recommend enabling 2FA, passkey logins, an anti-phishing code, a trading password, and adding wallets to your withdrawal address whitelist.

    Step 4: Deposit Funds

    Buy and sell Crypto
    Buy and sell Crypto

Now that your KuCoin account is verified and secure, you're ready to deposit funds and start trading. There are multiple KuCoin exchange deposit methods. Users can deposit crypto directly, deposit fiat, buy crypto with their local currency, or purchase assets from other users via the P2P marketplace.

Once you've deposited and KuCoin has credited your account (the process can take an hour or two, depending on the network used), you can start trading, staking, or using any of the exchange's other tools.

    Initial Setup & User Experience

When conducting a KuCoin exchange review, always consider the user experience. If an exchange has all the features you're looking for, it's easy to overlook the user journey, but it's essential for convenient day-to-day use.

    Ease of Use

KuCoin is neither particularly easy nor difficult to use. It is approachable for everyone, but the quantity of advanced features could cause trouble for beginners. That said, there are simple versions of most tools, which soften the learning curve and make KuCoin considerably more accessible.

KuCoin uses a grey-and-white color scheme with green accents highlighting key sections. It's easy on the eyes and offers impressive clarity. Moreover, it's easy to monitor your portfolio, as KuCoin provides daily profit/loss updates and lets you display your portfolio value in USDT or BTC.

While evaluating KuCoin, I found the interface intuitive and the key features easy to find. While there is a significant amount of information on the screen, the explanations of its features make KuCoin far more accessible to those without prior experience with exchanges.

    Mobile App Review

    Kucoin Mobile app
    Kucoin Mobile app

Day traders, event-driven traders, and investors with significant holdings may need to manage their trades or holdings on the go, which is why crypto exchange mobile apps are essential.

The KuCoin app is available on Android and iOS devices. Users can install it from their respective app stores or download the APK directly from the KuCoin website, which I found useful for accessing the KuCoin Web3 wallet when the app is unavailable in their region.

While conducting a KuCoin Exchange app review, I found it delivered a stellar mobile experience. The app is easy to navigate, and you can access key sections conveniently via the bottom navigation bar. Users can switch between the 'Pro' and 'Lite' modes to enable or hide advanced features, such as futures trading.

The KuCoin mobile app is equally as well-equipped as the web platform. Users can trade spot/margin/futures markets, stake crypto, set up trading bots, and use the copy-trading platform. It also integrates KuCoin Web3 for decentralized trading, Decentralized Application (dApp) connectivity, and enhanced token support.

Looking at KuCoin exchange reviews can help people gauge the app's performance. On the Google Play Store, KuCoin is rated 4.5/5 based on over 280,000 reviews, while it holds a 4.7/5 rating on iOS. Users praise its advanced features, but have issues with certain promotions.

Overall, the KuCoin mobile app is feature-rich and user-friendly. With its Lite and Pro modes, users can tailor the app to their specific needs, making day-to-day use highly convenient. The main drawback is limited availability in some countries, such as the UK, but the availability of a downloadable APK solves this issue.

    Kucoin Key Features & Services

    Kucoin Key features and services
    Kucoin Key features and services

The best crypto exchanges will share many similar features. For example, a trading interface, crypto earning programs, and analysis tools. However, the specific tools will have different features and limitations depending on the platform used.

    Buying & Selling Crypto

The most convenient crypto exchanges will support a wide range of assets. If a platform offers only a few assets, you'll likely need to use a separate exchange to diversify your portfolio, which is convoluted and complicates portfolio management.

There are 908 KuCoin exchange-supported coins and thousands of trading pairs denominated in stablecoins, BTC/ETH/KCS, and EUR/BRL. Users can buy and sell thousands of smaller tokens via KuCoin's Web3 platform, available directly on the main KuCoin website or mobile app.

The KuCoin exchange features multiple ways to buy and sell cryptocurrency, enabling users to easily on-ramp or cash out as needed, enhancing the user experience.

    • Fiat Deposit: The easiest way to fund a KuCoin account with cash is via the fiat deposit tool. Users can deposit various currencies, including EUR and BRL, using local payment methods. Fees vary by currency and payment method.
    • Fast Trade: Instead of depositing fiat, KuCoin lets users purchase cryptocurrency directly using local currencies, including AUD, AED, and INR. Third-party services like Banxa and Simplex operate the gateway, so it accepts many payment methods, but fees are typically on the higher end.
    • Peer-to-Peer (P2P): While KuCoin is a Centralized Exchange (CEX), it allows people to buy/sell crypto in a decentralized manner via its P2P marketplace. Users interact directly with each other, while KuCoin provides an escrow service, which keeps each party safe during transactions.

Because KuCoin offers multiple ways to buy crypto or deposit fiat, it's suitable for beginners and experienced users alike. New crypto investors may prefer Fast Trade, while privacy-focused users could benefit from the P2P tool. Regardless of the gateway, KuCoin's tools for buying and selling crypto are streamlined and straightforward.

    Trading Platform

    Kucoin Trading
    Kucoin Trading

KuCoin is an advanced crypto trading platform that doesn't restrict users to spot trading alone. It supports derivatives, margin trading, crypto bots, copy trading, a Decentralized Exchange (DEX), and a beginner-friendly conversion tool, ensuring that KuCoin offers something for everyone, regardless of objectives and experience.

The main KuCoin trading interface is largely the same across each market. KuCoin offers TradingView charts, which provide access to a wide range of technical indicators and drawing tools, enabling in-depth analysis. To enable traders to enter positions with precision, KuCoin offers eight order types:

    Order Type Definition
Market Executes at the current best price
Limit Executes at a specific, user-defined price
Advanced Limit Users can choose when the trade gets removed from the order book
Stop Limit When a trade hits a user-defined price, the limit order becomes active
Stop Market When a trade hits a user-defined price, it automatically places a market order
One-Cancels-the-Other Combines a take-profit and stop-loss order, canceling one when it executes the other
Trailing Stop Sets a stop-loss order that follows a specific percentage behind the current price
TWAP Breaks a large order into multiple smaller orders, which it executes in timed chunks over a specific period

Although the trading interface is relatively busy, it will feel familiar to anyone who has traded on a crypto exchange, making it much easier to switch from another platform to KuCoin. The conversion tool is significantly simpler, but still surprisingly powerful. It charges zero fees and features market/limit order types.

As we mentioned, KuCoin offers access to crypto derivatives products. Users can boost their profits and losses with up to 125x leverage. Both USDT and inverse futures contracts are available. While testing for this KuCoin review, I found that it also offers margin trading with 10x leverage, ideal for longer-term trades.

KuCoin is one of the world's most popular crypto trading platforms, processing around $2 billion in daily volume. As such, it commands significant liquidity, enabling it to process large orders without impacting prices. CoinMarketCap has awarded it a liquidity score of 629, comparable to Gemini (699), MEXC (684), and BitFinex (589).

    Supported Wallets & Custody

Before you decide to trust your money with KuCoin, it's essential to understand the differences between custodial and non-custodial wallets, as these concepts directly affect convenience and security.

    • Custodial Wallet: Most crypto exchanges provide custodial wallets. They're easy to use, but the issuer (in this case, KuCoin) manages the seed phrase/private keys, and therefore has complete control over the wallet. The exchange can pause withdrawals or freeze assets unilaterally (although this is extremely rare).
    • Non-Custodial Wallet: The superior choice for security-conscious individuals, non-custodial (self-custody) wallets are controlled directly by the user. They, not the issuer, manage the private keys/seed phrase, so a third party cannot unilaterally freeze assets or otherwise manage the wallet.

KuCoin offers a custodial exchange wallet. Users can fund it via fiat or crypto and immediately trade on KuCoin, without having to transfer assets to another wallet or account. It's great for temporarily storing investments and trading funds, but there are more secure options for long-term storage.

However, during my KuCoin crypto wallet review, I learned that the exchange also offers a non-custodial Web3 wallet. Available from directly within the main KuCoin app, the Web3 wallet introduces new utility, including Decentralized Application (dApp) connectivity, access to smaller tokens, and support for decentralized trading.

Unfortunately, KuCoin does not allow users to link a hardware wallet to their exchange account to enhance security. While the feature is relatively uncommon amongst other exchanges, it is a notable advantage when available.

Between its custodial and non-custodial wallets, KuCoin offers crypto storage solutions for everyone. Regardless of whether you're looking for a basic wallet integrated into a crypto investment platform or an advanced wallet that can interact with the broader Web3 ecosystem. As such,

    Earning & Lending

    Kucoin Earn
    Kucoin Earn

Staking or yield farming are among the most used features on any crypto exchange. Users can delegate their assets and earn interest on crypto. The exchange manages the assets, allocating them to staking pools or DeFi activities, making participation simple.

KuCoin offers a wide range of earn products, including:

    • Simple Earn (Beginner-friendly): Delegate crypto and receive rewards with fixed or flexible lockup terms.
    • Hold to Earn (Beginner-friendly): Earn rewards on the assets you hold in your KuCoin funding, trading, margin, futures, mining, or unified accounts.
    • Staking (Beginner-friendly): Contribute to on-chain activity and strengthen the underlying networks while earning rewards with fixed and flexible terms.
    • Crypto Lending Pro (Advanced): Generate yield by lending out your assets to other users. KuCoin takes a 15% cut of earnings and uses the revenue for the Risk Insurance Fund.
    • Dual Investment (Advanced): A structured product where users generate high yields in one of two currencies based on whether their target price is hit.
    • KuMining (Advanced): KuCoin's cloud mining feature enables people to participate in crypto mining, while a third party operates the hardware.
    • KuCoin Wealth (High-net-worth): Designed specifically for individuals and institutions with significant capital, KuCoin Wealth offers simplistic fixed-term yield-generation opportunities.

With beginner-friendly earn tools and advanced options like the KuCoin Exchange lending tool, KuCoin caters to a wide range of users. While its features may not be universally suitable, it's powerful and versatile, allowing users to pick and choose which services they want to use.

    Security Measures

    Kucoin Security Options
    Kucoin Security Options

We must trust exchanges to store our assets and information while processing trades, deposits, and withdrawals fairly. Security is arguably the most important factor to consider when evaluating a selection of platforms.

How does the KuCoin Exchange's security compare to other popular platforms? The core account-level protections are similar. Users can enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to add extra security during sign-in, set an extra trading password to protect funds, and set anti-phishing codes to verify genuine KuCoin communications.

Like many modern crypto exchanges, KuCoin supports setting a login passkey for convenient, secure account access without requiring 2FA. You can use your mobile or computer as a passkey device. For ease of use, we recommend using the device that primarily accesses your KuCoin account.

It's also possible to whitelist specific wallet addresses, restricting withdrawals to approved addresses and preventing hackers from sending your holdings to an unknown wallet. You can add new withdrawal addresses with a small safety delay, so it's advisable to use the tool, particularly if you regularly withdraw to the same wallet.

While the exact distribution is not public, KuCoin holds the majority of user funds in cold storage, reducing the impact of hot wallet attacks, such as the one that affected the exchange in 2020. While it doesn't offer insurance on holdings, KuCoin's Insurance Fund protects futures traders against excess liquidation losses.

In addition to its platform-level security measures, KuCoin has developed a transparent proof-of-reserves system that demonstrates it backs user assets 1:1. While it doesn't use a Merkle Root system, which is more transparent to individuals, KuCoin’s PoR system is regularly audited by independent third-party firms to confirm its status.

Unfortunately, KuCoin doesn't undergo (or at least clearly disclose) third-party audits beyond its proof-of-reserves system, which makes it difficult to verify the platform's level of protection. Despite this, KuCoin's other security measures make it a safe platform for traders and investors.

    Payment Methods & Fees

When you're looking for the best crypto exchange, it's essential to consider trading costs and any additional fees. While the charges that exchanges levy are typically minor, they can add up to significant amounts over extended periods or with high trading frequency.

While there are no KuCoin exchange fees for cryptocurrency deposits, withdrawal costs vary by asset. We've included a table showcasing the cost of withdrawing a few popular assets.

    Asset Name Withdrawal Fee
    Bitcoin 0.00009 BTC ($6.49)
    Ethereum 0.0015 ETH ($3.31)
    XRP 0.30 XRP($0.4)
    BNB 0.000953 BNB ($0.57)
USDT (ERC-20) 5.50 USDT ($5.49) (Varies by withdrawal amount, up to $36)

Depositing or withdrawing via SEPA (Europe) incurs a €1 fee; Easy Bank Transfer (Europe) deposits cost 0.25% + €0.3; Pix deposits are free; and withdrawals cost R$2.6.

While most leading exchanges (Binance, Bybit, etc.) impose a fixed trading fee, KuCoin uses a system that is considerably more confusing. It separates assets by class, each with its own fees. Moreover, there are separate charges for futures trading, volume-based discounts, and a 20% discount for paying fees via KCS.

VIP Level Spot Class A (Mainstream assets) Spot Class B (Less Popular) Spot Class C (Lowest Liquidity) Futures
    0 0.1%/0.1% 0.2%/0.2% 0.3%/0.3% 0.02%/0.06%
    1 0.095%/01% 0.19%/02% 0.285%/03% 0.018%/0.06%
    2 0.09%/0.1%  0.18%/0.2% 0.27%/0.3% 0.015%/0.06%
    3 0.075%/0.09% 0.15%/0.18% 0.225%/0.27% 0.01%/0.06%
    4 0.055%/0.075% 0.11%/0.15% 0.165%/0.225% 0.008%/0.053%
    5 0.035%/0.055% 0.07%/0.11% 0.105%/0.165% 0.006%/0.048%
    6 0.025%/0.045% 0.05%/0.09% 0.075%/0.135% 0.004%/0.043%
    7 0.015%/0.042% 0.03%/0.084% 0.045%/0.126% 0.002%/0.039%
    8 0.01%/0.04% 0.02%/0.08% 0.03%/0.12% 0%/0.036%

Nobody wants to start using an exchange only to suddenly encounter hidden charges. KuCoin is relatively transparent regarding its fee structure. However, it introduced dormancy fees in 2025, which are both confusing and anti-user. Inactive accounts that have not completed KYC may be charged a monthly fee based on their balance.

In addition to fees, you must also consider KuCoin's withdrawal limits. The restrictions differ by payment method and currency:

Payment Method Minimum and Maximum Deposit Minimum and Maximum Withdrawal
    SEPA and SEPA Instant €1.01 / €50,000 €1.01 / €50,000
    SEPA Online Banking €2 / €10,000 N/A
    PIX R$1 / R$ 200,000 R$3 / R$ 200,000
Cryptocurrency N/A N/A (Must ensure the withdrawal fee is covered)

KuCoin is priced relatively competitively compared to other popular exchanges. A trading fee of around 0.1% applies to most top cryptocurrency platforms. KuCoin matches this, but only for Class-A assets, so an alternative exchange may be better for users who trade lesser-known assets.

    Customer Support

Having an issue with your exchange and being unable to get assistance can cause significant stress, so having access to responsive and knowledgeable customer service is a significant benefit.

I was impressed with the KuCoin Exchange's customer support team. First, you speak to a chatbot, which can direct you to relevant articles in KuCoin's support center. For more complex issues, you can request human support (available 24/7) via live chat or a ticket system.

During my KuCoin exchange review, I tested the support team by simulating a KYC issue. It connected me to an advisor instantly, who immediately reviewed my chatbot history and determined that the program was KYC-related. The support was efficient and the team member knowledgeable and kind, resulting in an excellent experience.

    Geographical Availability

KuCoin operates globally and typically complies with local regulations. However, in some countries, it's entirely unavailable or geographically restricts access to certain features, such as futures or P2P trading. Users in the following regions will have limited access to KuCoin's services:

    • United Kingdom
    • United States
    • Singapore
    • China
    • Thailand
    • Europe

While the KuCoin platform may be available in these regions, its features are severely limited. So, if you're an international investor, it's worth double-checking whether KuCoin is limited in your country. If so, an alternative, locally regulated exchange may better serve you.

Other Kucoin Exchange Products and Services

KuCoin offers a large range of additional features that help to differentiate it from general-purpose exchanges. Some of these features include:

    Copy Trading

    Kucoin Copy Trading
    Kucoin Copy Trading

KuCoin operates a highly active copy trading platform. Users follow and automatically execute the same positions as experienced traders, allowing beginners to profit and develop strategies by seeing what works for others. Leaders receive a portion of their followers' profits, providing a consistent source of additional income.

Followers can view data like profit/losses, total followers, and strategy, enabling them to find leaders who suit their trading style and risk management approach. As such, it's worth checking out KuCoin's copy trading platform, regardless of whether you're a beginner or an experienced trader.

    KuCoin Web3

    Kucoin web3
    Kucoin web3

We've briefly mentioned KuCoin's Web3 service. It's integrated directly into the exchange, offering seamless access via web or mobile. It provides a non-custodial wallet, access to lesser-known tokens, and dApp connectivity, making it a solid alternative to wallets like MetaMask.

With a secure way to access the broader crypto space, support for a diverse range of assets, and built-in trading capabilities, KuCoin Web3 is an excellent tool for accessing the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.

    KuCoin Learn

If you're a beginner, want to brush up on certain concepts, or need to know how certain features work, KuCoin Learn is a valuable resource. It includes a glossary of common terms and articles that go into detail on topics such as KuMining, crypto stocks, and Web3.

KuCoin Learn is completely free and constantly updated with new content. While advanced users may not derive much value from the service, it's great to have it at hand.

Who is Kucoin Exchange Best Suited For?

KuCoin is an all-in-one exchange, making it suitable for a wide range of users. Whether you're a beginner, advanced trader, or Web3 enthusiast, the exchange has something for everyone.

While its educational resources ensure that KuCoin's features are accessible, the exchange excels for experienced traders with the knowledge to take full advantage of its tools. However, traders/investors who prioritize security and regulatory clarity may prefer an alternative, such as Coinbase, which has an unblemished security track record.

    Conclusion & Final Verdict

After extensively testing the platform and learning about user experiences for this KuCoin Exchange review, I determined that the platform is trustworthy, versatile, and well-rounded.

Although its features could overwhelm beginners, KuCoin offers a 'Lite' mode that hides non-essential tools, as well as an educational platform to help users learn about its features. As such, it's suitable for those without previous experience with crypto exchanges.

Similarly, advanced users will appreciate KuCoin's diverse feature set, which includes high leverage limits and automatic trading bots. Users can trade in multiple ways (decentralized and centralized) and fund their accounts in local currencies. Regardless of your objectives, KuCoin is a solid exchange as long as it's not prohibited in your region.

How does KuCoin Exchange make money?

Crypto exchanges like KuCoin generate revenue by charging fees for services like trading, staking, and buying/selling crypto.
