Shugart, Alan

Led the IBM team that developed the floppy disk, revolutionizing the technology of storage in 1971. In 1979 he founded Shugart Technology, which later became Seagate Technology.

Stallman, Richard

Discouraged by the proprietary corporate system of software development, Stallman quit his job at the MIT AI Lab to found the Free Software Foundation, which is dedicated to eliminating restrictions on copying, redistribution, understanding, and modification of computer programs. Stallman also wrote the GNU Manifesto, in which he argues for the free distribution of software, and started the GNU project with the aim of creating an operating system that could be shared freely with anyone around the world.

Stroustrup, Bjarne

Inventor of the C++ programming language, pioneering the use of object-oriented and generic programming techniques in application areas where efficiency is a premium. Stroustrup is the head of AT&T Lab’s Large-scale Programming Research department, an AT&T Bell Laboratories Fellow, and an AT&T Fellow. He is actively involved in the ANSI/ISO standardization of C++. Stroustrup wrote The C++ Programming Language, the definitive book on C++. His second book, The Design and Evolution of C++, broke new ground in the description of the way a programming language was shaped by ideas, ideals, problems and practical constraints.
