MoonPay has launched PayBox, a new payment vault that enables users of ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude to move, trade, and spend money directly through natural language prompts, marking one of the biggest steps yet toward AI-powered commerce.
The product allows users to connect PayBox to ChatGPT or Claude through a custom connector, fund it with either cryptocurrency or traditional payment methods, and instruct the AI assistant to complete transactions without leaving the conversation.
Users can ask the AI to swap tokens, send stablecoins, book flights, reserve restaurants, or purchase products using simple text prompts.
Unlike conventional AI assistants that stop at recommendations, PayBox is designed to let AI execute financial actions while keeping users in control of approvals and spending permissions.
AI Agents Gain Transactional Capabilities
MoonPay describes PayBox as the first payment vault built specifically for AI. Rather than handing custody of assets to an AI platform, the system allows users to retain ownership while giving their AI assistant permission to initiate transactions within predefined limits.
Users can choose between an “Always Ask” mode, where every payment requires passkey approval, or an “Autonomous” mode that allows AI agents to execute transactions automatically within user-defined spending limits. Those permissions can be modified or revoked at any time.
The platform currently supports Solana alongside Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, and Robinhood Chain. Outside of crypto, PayBox can also process purchases through merchants connected to the x402 open payments standard, enabling services such as restaurant reservations, travel bookings, and online shopping.
Security Built Around User Controlled Funds
MoonPay says neither the company nor the AI assistant can independently access a user’s assets.
Wallet keys are protected using threshold cryptography and secure enclaves, preventing any single party from assembling the complete private key needed to authorize transactions. The infrastructure builds on technology from Sodot, the digital asset security company MoonPay acquired earlier this year. According to MoonPay, Sodot’s infrastructure has secured more than $50 billion in digital assets across over 10 million wallets.
For card payments, PayBox integrates with Visa’s agent commerce framework, using virtual cards and passkey authentication to reduce fraud risk.
Competition in AI Commerce Is Accelerating
The launch comes as technology and financial companies race to build infrastructure for agentic commerce, where AI systems do more than answer questions; they complete tasks on behalf of users.
Robinhood, Coinbase, and Visa have all introduced initiatives that allow AI agents to make purchases or interact with financial services. MoonPay is differentiating PayBox by relying on the open x402 protocol instead of limiting transactions to a proprietary ecosystem.
MoonPay said it plans to support additional AI platforms, alongside deeper decentralized finance capabilities, including liquidity management, perpetual futures trading, and automated token swaps governed by user-defined rules.
