Artificial intelligence agents are moving closer to becoming independent economic actors, and Cloudflare wants to give them their own financial infrastructure.

The company has introduced Cloudflare Wallets, enabling AI agents to hold stablecoins, make payments, purchase online services, and receive funds without relying on a human’s credit card or bank account. The launch marks another step toward an internet where software agents can transact autonomously rather than simply answer questions.

The wallets build on Cloudflare’s broader agent platform and integrate with the x402 payment protocol, allowing agents to pay for APIs, datasets, computing resources, and other digital services directly through standard web requests. Instead of creating accounts, copying API keys, or entering payment details, an AI agent can complete transactions programmatically using stablecoins.

AI Agents Are Becoming Their Own Customers

Traditional internet services were designed around human users. Every purchase typically requires an account, a payment method, authentication, and manual approval.

Cloudflare’s new wallet infrastructure removes many of those steps for AI agents. An autonomous coding assistant, for example, can purchase cloud computing resources, register a domain, deploy an application, or pay for API access without waiting for a human to enter billing information. The payment itself becomes proof of authorization rather than a separate login credential.

The company says this model is particularly important as AI agents increasingly perform long-running tasks in the background, where repeated human intervention would interrupt automation.

Stablecoins Replace Credit Cards

Rather than relying on card networks, Cloudflare has built the payment flow around stablecoins.

The system uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code via the x402 protocol, which allows servers to request payment before delivering digital resources. Once an agent submits a valid payment credential, access is granted automatically, eliminating the need for subscriptions, invoices, or manual checkout processes.

Cloudflare believes this approach is better suited to machine-to-machine commerce because it supports instant settlement, low transaction costs, and micropayments worth only fractions of a cent. Those characteristics make it economically viable for agents to buy thousands of small services each day.

The wallet infrastructure also complements Cloudflare’s recent partnership with Stripe, which enables AI agents to create Cloudflare accounts, purchase domains, and deploy applications without requiring humans to copy API keys or enter credit card details.

Agentic Commerce Is Taking Shape

Cloudflare’s announcement reflects a broader race to build financial infrastructure for autonomous software.

Coinbase has expanded support for x402-based agent payments through Base and USDC. Stripe recently introduced its Machine Payments Protocol, while Google, Visa, and MoonPay are also developing systems designed specifically for AI commerce. The common objective is enabling software agents to discover services, negotiate prices, and complete transactions independently.

For Cloudflare, wallets represent more than another developer feature. They are part of a wider effort to transform AI agents from passive assistants into economic participants capable of earning revenue, purchasing resources, and operating continuously without human payment credentials.

If that vision gains traction, future AI assistants may no longer ask users to enter a credit card. Instead, they could carry their own wallets, pay for what they need in real time, and settle transactions automatically using stablecoins.
