A URL shortener is a way to make a long Web address (URL) shorter. URL shorten services are online tools and services that allow you to provide a long URL to a specific webpage and obtain a much shorter URL from the service provider. Luckily for you, there’s a free URL shortener around every corner. A URL shortener works because of a Web server function called a redirect or URL redirection. Basically the new URL (the shortened URL) will redirect users to the old URL (your long URL).

For most sites, you simply enter your Web URL and click the shorten/submit button and the new URL will be provided. You can copy and paste the new, shorter URL to your clipboard to use in social, email and other places.

Other URL Shorteners

In social media, short URLs are pretty common. In addition to using free services, like those listed above, many social media sites offer URL redirection in the platform. For example, long URLs are shortened on Twitter using t.co and lnkd.in on Linked In. These URL shorten services can only be used when posting URLs from within the social networking site.
