A family of four was tied up and held captive for more than three hours during a violent home invasion in northern France, with attackers allegedly forcing the father to surrender access to nearly €40,000 ($47,000) in cryptocurrency.
The attack took place overnight from Saturday, Sept. 19, into Sunday in Vendin-le-Vieil, in France’s Pas-de-Calais department.
Four masked suspects entered the property and restrained the man, his partner and their two children, aged eight and 12, according to French media reports cited by IBTimes UK.
The father works in the cryptocurrency industry and appears to have been the target of the raid.
The attackers allegedly assaulted the father while demanding access codes linked to his cryptocurrency holdings.
His 12-year-old daughter was also reportedly struck in the face with car keys. The four family members remained restrained inside the house for more than three hours before the father managed to alert emergency services at around 8 a.m. Sunday.
The suspects fled before police arrived and remained at large as of Sunday. Reports put the stolen cryptocurrency at approximately €40,000. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether any of those funds have been recovered.
The case highlights a particular vulnerability of self-custodied crypto: criminals who cannot break a wallet’s cryptography can instead attempt to force its owner to unlock it.
The Vendin-le-Vieil raid is far from an isolated incident.
On Sept. 6, a mother and her son were held captive in their Nice home by two masked attackers. The suspects escaped with phones, a passport, and access to a cryptocurrency account worth about $25,000, according to reporting based on sources close to the investigation.
French gendarmes also announced arrests this month over two earlier crypto-linked cases. In one case, five family members, including two children and their grandparents, were tied up at a home in Finistère in April while a relative working in crypto was absent. Four suspects were arrested in September.
Separately, five people were arrested over the March attack on a woman in Haute-Savoie who was bound and beaten for hours as attackers tried to obtain valuables and access to alleged crypto holdings.
The problem extends beyond France. Chainalysis estimated that around $30 million had already been stolen through violent crypto attacks worldwide during the first half of 2026, after a record $58 million in 2025. Home invasions accounted for 37% of incidents tracked in 2026.

Unlike money held behind traditional banking controls, cryptocurrency can sometimes be transferred immediately once criminals obtain a victim’s credentials.
For the family in Vendin-le-Vieil, that reportedly turned digital wealth into the motive for a terrifying attack inside their own home.
