Vivid Vervet introduces updates across the Ubuntu desktop, smartphone, cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem as well as the first stable release of Ubuntu’s lightweight “Snappy” Ubuntu Core version developed for embedded IoT devices.
Other additions in the Ubuntu Vivid Vervet release include the new Linux 3.19 kernel, the LXD Linux container hypervisor, the Kilo release of OpenStack, updated integrated applications like Firefox (v37.0) and LibreOffice (v220.127.116.11), and a switch for the default init system from Canonical s upstart to the Debian-standard systemd.
What Exactly Is a Vivid Vervet?
Vivid is an adjective that refers to something bright or intense and capable of producing strong, distinct impressions on the mind, and a vervet is a variety of monkey native to South Africa and eastern parts of the continent. Vervets feature a distinct black face with a white fringe of hair.
The Vivid Vervet release of Ubuntu Linux is expected to be succeeded by Ubuntu 15.10 in October 2015.
