Short for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV means any type of aircraft with no pilot on board. UAVs are remotely piloted. This could be an aerial vehicle using pre-programmed flight plans or a remote controlled aircraft. The newer phrase, UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) is used to distinguish systems which use only pre-programmed behaviors, such as drones, from other UAVs.
