Roll-Up Flexible Screen

Also called a roll-up display, a roll-up flexible screen is one that can be bent, rolled-up, scrunched and generally manipulated in ways not possible with traditional displays. You could roll the display up like a newspaper, making flexible screens easy to move around or store in small spaces when not being used.

Roll-Up Flexible Screens Use OLED Technology

The flexible screen is possible due to advancements in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which is a move away from light emitting diode (LED) which requires light from a back panel. When removing the need for the back panel, the display can bend.

Today’s flexible screens are full HD and offer resolution up to 1,200 by 810 pixels. Current display prototypes are 18 inches, but innovators including LG expect to push flexible screens to sizes of 55 inches. LG Display offered a look at a prototype 18-inch screen at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, 2016.
