Microsoft Xbox One

A next-generation Xbox gaming and entertainment system from Microsoft that is currently scheduled to arrive in November 2013. The $499 Microsoft Xbox One “all-in-one entertainment system” will serve as the successor to the Xbox 360, which was first released in 2005.

The Microsoft Xbox One system combines a gaming console with the ability to watch television and movie content as well as listen to music or chat with others via Skype. The Xbox One will also provide integrated support for Microsoft’s Kinect, which enables users to control games and entertainment content with physical motion or voice commands instead of with a joystick or similar input device, and Xbox LIVE, which makes it possible for users to play their Xbox One games online with other users.

Unlike its predecessors, the Microsoft Xbox One system will require an internet connection as well as a Kinect connection, and the system itself will be powered by the cloud. The Xbox One presents additional restrictions in the form of digital rights management via required online authentication as well as limitations on the resale of used games, and it also lacks backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 games.

Microsoft s Xbox One will compete in the gaming console arena with systems like the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Wii U from Nintendo, as well as in the home media market with products like Apple TV and Google TV.
