An entertainment set-top box from Amazon developed to compete with other streaming video offerings like Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Roku. Amazon’s Fire TV costs $99 for the set-top box, and a video game controller add-on can be purchased for $39.99.

FireTV streaming video content currently includes Amazon’s own Prime Instant Video cloud television and video streaming content as well as Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, Disney, Showtime and other programming options. Amazon will also be creating and producing its own exclusive television shows for viewing on Amazon Fire TV.

Features offered by Fire TV include instant video start (“ASAP”), voice-enabled search for content, a streaming music player, high-end video-gaming functionality and a quad-core processor with 2GB of memory. Amazon Fire TV is based on the Android mobile operating system and was created under an open-source, open-standards development ecosystem, unlike that of Apple TV’s Apple iOS.
