Hewlett-Packard (HP)

Hewlett-Packard (HP) was founded in 1939 by William Hewlett and David Packard and was known for its hardware advancements, such as personal computers, and their printers. Hewlett-Packard had acquired many companies over the decades, one of the most notable being Palm, Inc. in 2010. In 2015, Hewlett-Packard split into two companies – Hewlett-Packard, Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company. HP, Inc. focuses on technology and print production, while Hewlett Packard Enterprise (or HPE) has expanded to software, the cloud, and data storage.

HP is known for its laptops and popular LaserJet and InkJet printers. It offers mobile applications that make printing more mobile-friendly and accessible. HP is strongly committed to sustainability. It publishes an annual Sustainable Impact report and publicly states goals for improvement and methods it’s using to improve sustainability. HP is currently using ocean-bound plastic to create new electronics, including a notebook laptop made partially from recycled material. It is also committed to racial diversity in the workplace, transparently listing its employee demographics in its open report and developing specific hiring goals for minorities and people of color.

HPE and recent growth

In 2016, about a year after Hewlett-Packard announced its split, HPE drew questions about its sustainability as a company: if it mainly dealt in hardware, how long would it be relevant? But shortly after that, HPE developed strategies for IT infrastructure that now include hybrid cloud options, cloud management, and virtual machines. HPE GreenLake is an IT-as-a-Service platform that manages workloads and software across on-premise data centers, other centers, and different cloud environments. GreenLake automates workload balancing across hybrid cloud environments and offers smooth cloud infrastructure options. HPE is keeping itself relevant in a rapidly changing technology environment, where software and flexible data management is just as important as hardware.
