What is a Twitter Hashtag?
On Twitter, a hashtag is a way for users to organize tweets for Twitter search engines. Using hashtags helps others to discover your tweets when searching Twitter. The hashtag is the pound symbol (#), followed by the keyword or phrase that describes the main topic of the message (e.g. #technology). You can think of a hashtag as shorthand to summarize your messages. When users search Twitter using a hashtag query, all tweets containing the hashtag will be shown in the search results.

How do I Choose a Hashtag and How Many Can I Use?
Simply add the pound sign (#) to the main word that describes the focus of your tweet. For example, if you are tweeting about your Apple iPad, you might include #iPad or #iOS to your Twitter message.
Quick Tip: Hashtags are not case-sensitive, but don't use spaces. For example #CloudComputing not #Cloud Computing.
