Yakkety Yak is the Ubuntu codename for version 16.10 of the Ubuntu Linux-based operating system. Officially released on October 14th, 2016, Yakkety Yak follows the Xenial Xerus (v16.04 LTS) release and serves as a standard release for the Linux server operating system as opposed to a Long Term Support (LTS) release, which is supported for five years as opposed to nine months for non-LTS releases.
What's New in Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak?
Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak offers several significant improvements and additions for the Linux server OS, including OpenStack Newton support, Kubernetes for process-container coordination and management, a developer preview of the Unity 8 device convergence framework, and updates in the form of Juju 2.0 for Ubuntu's deployment and software orchestration system and MaaS 2.0 for Canonical's Metal-as-a-Service technology.
Juju 2.0 delivers improved organization enhancements and also adds the use and integration of Canonical's LXD container hypervisor, and MaaS 2.0 provides IPAM (IP Address Management) capabilities as well as support for bare-metal provisioning of Ubuntu and CentOS Linux and also Microsoft Windows hosts.
Yakkety Yak also offers updated technologies for enabling different types of containers, including LXD 2.4 for machine containers, Snapd 2.16 for application containers and Docker 1.12 for process containers.
What Exactly Is a Yakkety Yak?
Yakkety, or yakkety-yak, is a word that refers to being prone to indulging in idle chatter or gossip about others. It's also the title of a hit pop song from the Coasters in the 1950s. A yak is a domesticated wild ox native to Tibet that is used as a pack animal. Yaks are recognizable for their large horns, humped shoulders and shaggy hair.
The Yakkety Yak release of Ubuntu Linux is scheduled to be followed by Ubuntu 17.04 in April 2017 and is expected to feature the Ubuntu codename of Zesty Zapus.
