Scrum training and certification refers to courses and exams available to provide instruction and certify aptitude in Scrum, an agile methodology and framework for managing complex projects.

Numerous companies provide Scrum training and certification programs, with some being more widely recognized and accepted in the Agile world. Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org are considered by many as the two most reputable Scrum certification organizations.

Current Scrum Training and Certification Options

Five of the most popular Scrum training and master certification programs available today are:

Professional Scrum Master (PSM I)

Perhaps the most recognized and multi-leveled Scrum Master certification, the PSM training and certification is managed by Scrum.org, and offers access to the PSM II and PSM III certifications upon successful accreditation of the tier before it.

Certified Scrum Master (CSM)

The Scrum Alliance provides the CSM training and certification. A 2-day training event is required as well as passing an exam, and CSM holders will need to renew their certification every two years at an additional cost of $100.

Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)

The Project Management Institute s (PMI) Agile Certified Practitioner Scrum Master certification requires at least 2000 hours of project experience, 1500 hours working on Agile projects, and at least 21 hours of training in Agile practices. It also covers other Agile methods such as Kanban, Lean and eXtreme Programming.

Agile Scrum Master (ASM)

The Dutch company EXIN provides the Agile Scrum Mater certification, which requires passing an exam that costs 170 Euro.

Scrum Master Certified (SCM)

Scrum Study, part of VMEdu, provides a Scrum Master exam that costs $450 in order to earn the SCM certification.

Average Annual Salary for Scrum Masters

As the most widely-used framework for agile development, Scrum certified employees are held in high demand and typically command a high salary as a result.

The average annual salary for a Scrum Master in the United States is just under $88,000 as of 2018, with Scrum Master salaries typically ranging from a low of about $75,000 per year to just over $100,000 per year, depending on the size of the organization and industry, as well as various other factors.
