Virtual Office Software Definition & Meaning

Virtual office software is a platform designed to give employees a realistic office environment while working remotely. Many virtual office platforms have 2D or 3D floor plans that simulate an office space. These floor plans may feature meeting rooms where coworkers can have a video conference or meet to work, avatars to personalize employees, and hangout spaces where employees can congregate virtually while not working. Some virtual office software allows employees to mark their work status so coworkers know how and when to interact with them.

Virtual office software has chat and video conference features and project boards. Some software solutions also integrate with existing project management and communication platforms, allowing team members to seamlessly message each other and work on the same projects. Many virtual offices have been developed in the past year or two and don’t have full features yet, but they’re gaining awareness. Here are a few virtual office software solutions:

  • Sococo
  • Wurkr
  • Pragli
  • Knock.
  • MeetingRoom

When COVID-19 created the need for social distancing and for many businesses to operate virtually, the need for better remote workspaces increased. Working virtually has benefits, but it can also be very isolating for employees. Virtual office software seeks to remedy that by creating a realistic, engaging online office. Many new virtual office spaces are currently being tested and improved, and this software category will continue to develop and grow as more businesses operate from their employees’ homes.
