iPhone XS and iPhone XR

The iPhone XS, also known as the 2018 iPhone, is a new smartphone from Apple that the company announced on September 12, 2018 as a successor to 2017's iPhone X release.

The iPhone XS debuted along with the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. All three new 2018 iPhone models feature more powerful A12 Bionic chips, upgraded storage capabilities (up to 512 GB storage for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max), improved displays (5.8-inch for iPhone XS and 6.5-inch for iPhone XS Max), upgraded cameras, faster Face ID access, and improved water-resistance ratings (IP68 vs. the iPhone X’s IP67 rating).

iPhone XS and iPhone XR

iPhone XS vs. iPhone XR

The new iPhone XR model fits between the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in terms of display size, with a 6.1-inch LCD display. The LCD display lags behind the higher quality OLED displays featured on both XS models, which offer 458 pixels per inch resolution vs. 326 ppi for the iPhone XR, but it helps the iPhone XR serve as a more economical alternative to the XS models, and it also is available in a wider array of colors than the XS models.

The iPhone XR also lacks the dual wide-angle and telephoto cameras with dual optical image stabilization and 2x optical zoom of the XS models, featuring just a single 12-megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization.

Availability and Pricing for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR

All three 2018 iPhones are available now, and as far as pricing, the iPhone XS starts at $999 for the 64GB model and goes up to $1,349 for the 512 GB model, while the iPhone XS Max starts at $1099 and goes up to $1,449. The iPhone XR, in contrast, starts at a somewhat more affordable $749 and goes up to $899 for the 256 GB model.
