Business Process Management Definition & Meaning

Business process management (BPM), also known as workflow management, oversees the different processes that an organization uses to strengthen, grow, and optimize its business strategy. It allows businesses to see a full map or overhead view of their company plan. While task or project management refers to the activities that occur repeatedly during the course of a process, BPM is the overall plan that allows companies to explore what’s happening in every facet of the business. Projects and tasks fall under the umbrella of business processes.

The goal of BPM is to manage workflows, automate processes, achieve targeted results, and meet goals. By providing data and insight, the software helps businesses continue refining and improving strategies. Business processes range from fixed (necessary and unchanging) to fluid and flexible; often adjustments are required to meet new demands. BPM can also save businesses financial strain because it helps them organize, prioritize, and streamline work processes. By cutting unnecessary and outdated steps, businesses have more time and resources to focus on their most important processes.

BPM software allows businesses to share documents, emails, and workflow maps that can be modified. It cuts out extraneous work by automating processes, helping businesses make decisions based on data, and allowing them to manage their teams and projects more efficiently.
