Artful Aardvark is the Ubuntu codename for version 17.10 of the Ubuntu Linux-based operating system. Officially released on October 19th, 2017, Artful Aardvark follows the Zesty Zapus (v17.04) edition and serves as a non-Long Term Support (LTS) release for Ubuntu, which is supported for nine months as opposed to the five years of support offered for LTS releases.

What’s New in Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark?

Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark offers several significant improvements and additions for the Linux server OS, including GNOME as the default desktop (replacing Unity 8), Wayland as the default display server, Linux Kernel 4.13, GDM as the default Display Manager, and more.

What Exactly Is a Artful Aardvark?

Artful means possessing artistic or creative skills or talent, and the second part of Artful Aardvark refers a nocturnal burrowing mammal native to Africa that feeds on ants and termites.

While the aardvark shares similarities with anteaters and are often confused with the Central and South America-native anteaters, the two species are markedly different in a number of areas, most notably in the aardvark’s shorter, tubular snout compared to the anteater’s considerably longer nose.

The Artful Aardvark release of Ubuntu Linux was followed by Ubuntu 18.10 Bionic Beaver in April 2018.
