70:20:10 learning model

The 70:20:10 model for modern learning and development espouses that students and employees learn best (70%) from doing – specifically, on-the-job learning or direct involvement in projects – followed by social learning from interactions with peers (20%), and just 10% from traditional, instructor-led classroom settings.

With the increased popularity of modern educational technology (edtech) resources and platforms through elearning, mlearning, blended learning, and social learning, students now have more options they can utilize for each of part of the 70:20:10 learning model, and they are no longer limited in many cases by geographical or sociological constraints in the same way traditional classroom-based students have been.

How Edtech Has Helped the 70:20:10 Learning Model

The 20% part of the 70:20:10 learning model in particular has become more critical with the rise in edtech learning, with peer-based interaction and expanded discussion via online chat groups and forums, news feeds, multimedia presentations, blogs and similar resources that promote discussion among students and teachers for better assimilation of course content.

Edtech also helps instructors reach more students across a wider variety of locations and demographics, and facilitates discussion and learning outside of the classroom itself, which  boosts the effectiveness of the 10% “instructor-driving teaching” component of the 70:20:10 learning model.

Finally, the 70% of the 70:20:10 learning model is enhanced through edtech by expanding the reach of on-the-job learning and training and project-based learning by connecting students, teachers, and outside resources like topic experts, mentors, live and demonstration hands-on projects, and more.
