Technology Education (ed tech)
Technology education (also called ed tech or tech ed) is the study of technology. It is designed to teach students to be prepared for a number of technology-related fields, and to learn about technology within specific fields of study. Teachers cover topics related to technology processes, concepts and knowledge.
The broad philosophy of technological education is that students learn best by doing, so the curriculum adopts an activity-based and project-driven approach.
Ed Tech in Middle, Secondary and Post-Secondary Schools
The technology education course is commonly associated with primary and secondary education (k-12), however the first introduction in many public schools typically takes place during middle school (junior high school) learning years, where students complete projects and discover topics related to product design, research and development, invention, problem solving and work safety.
At the secondary education level, the tech ed curriculum is more advanced and will teach students additional skills that are useful in the workplace or post-secondary education. Knowledge and skills at this level include understanding fundamental technological education concepts, technological competence, creative and flexible problem solving, critical thinking, and understanding the need to adapt to technological advances in the workplace and the world in general.
Note: Technology education curriculum will change between schools, school districts and vary from country to country. To view samples of technology education course structures, see the list of related links below.
