Cps is the abbreviation of characters per second, a unit of measure used to describe the speed of dot-matrix and daisy-wheel printers. The speed of laser and ink-jet printers is described in terms of pages per minute (ppm).

Characters per second is also used in data entry to evaluate human typing speeds. The cps is the total number of characters entered, divided by the time taken to enter them.
